Ahoy, Collectors! NGC Introduces New Shipwreck Add-on Service

Posted on 4/4/2025

The collector-friendly option will make it easier than ever to submit these increasingly popular coins for a pedigree and special label.

Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) is excited to introduce a new Shipwreck Add-on Service for this increasingly popular segment of the numismatic marketplace. NGC has long offered certification services for coins recovered from shipwrecks as well as an attractive certification label to accompany them, but the add-on service makes it more convenient than ever to enjoy these attractive options.

NGC has conserved, authenticated, attributed, graded and encapsulated coins from a number of wrecks, including the SS Central America, SS Republic and SS New York. NGC has also certified many coins from the 1715 Fleet, including a Mexico 1715MO J 8 Escudos graded NGC MS 68 that realized more than $800,000 at an auction in 2024.

The introductory price for the Shipwreck Add-on Service is $20 plus tier, and it includes a special NGC label highlighting the coin's history (Shipwreck Certification Brown Label 819, shown with the Half Dollar above left). Other distinctive NGC shipwreck labels (including 1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label 743, shown with the 8 Escudos, above right) are available for an additional fee. For a list of NGC's shipwreck labels, click here.

As always, appropriate documentation must be included with the submission to secure the pedigree. (Please note: If NGC cannot verify the provenance, the coin will be certified without attribution and the service fee still applies.)

Submission forms will be updated soon to include an option for the Shipwreck Add-on Service, but for now, customers can simply write 'shipwreck' on the form itself. Learn about other NGC services for your coins at the Services and Fees page.
