Iconic Liberty Double Eagle Certified by NGC Realizes Almost $600,000 in Heritage Auction

Posted on 3/3/2025

Four other NGC-certified coins also realized six figures in the late February sale.

A famous vintage coin from the Carson City Mint realized $588,000 while four other rarities certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) also realized six figures in a recent sale. Heritage Auctions' Long Beach Expo US Coins Signature Auction 1381 was held February 27 to March 2, 2025.

The top NGC-certified coin in the auction was an 1870-CC Double Eagle graded NGC AU 53 (lot 3441), which realized $588,000. Well-known for its ties to the short-lived Carson City Mint, the coin was struck in the first year of operations at the Nevada branch mint. The 1870 issue has the lowest mintage of any Carson City Double Eagle, and only a few dozen examples are known to exist in all grades today. Among the handful that have survived, high-grade examples of the 1870-CC are especially rare, with none graded in Mint State, according to the auction house.
