Key members of the CGC grading team were honored at The Miami Con IV.

Recently, President of Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®), Matt Nelson and previous President, Mark Haspel were honored by The Miami Comic Book League, with each awarded the leagues coveted "Comic Book Community Legend Award.” The ceremony took place at The Miami Con IV, where the comic book community turned out in full force.

The “Comic Book Community Legend Award” is an honor given to individuals for their outstanding contributions and dedication to the comic book community.

Matt Nelson opened More Fun Comics in 1992 and quickly became more involved in the community. In 1994, he became an Overstreet Price Guide advisor and began writing numerous articles for both CBM and Overstreet. He then trained in restoration with Bill Sarill in 1996 and opened Classics Inc, which introduced his pressing and removal service in 2002. Nelson opened Worldwide Comics in 2008 and that same year established the renowned leaf casting method for conserving comics. In 2011, he launched comicpedigrees.com. In 2012 Nelson sold Classics Inc. to CGC (renamed CCS), moved to Florida, and began his transition to CGC grading. In 2021 he became President of CGC. Most recently, he authored the “Official CGC Grading Guide” in 2022.

Mark Haspel started working at the local Miami comic book store chain Tropic Comics at the age of 11. From there he went on to run comic book auctions in CBG, became an Overstreet Price Guide advisor and then found the Spokane Pedigree. He worked for Jerry Weist in the late 1990s, inspecting and lotting books for Sotheby’s auctions. In 1999, Haspel became a founding grader of CGC and helped create the grading standards the company uses to this day. He is both a CGC pedigree and restoration detection expert, serving as Vice President of CGC from 2004-2008 and President from 2008-2011.

Congratulations, Matt and Mark!
