Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) originated from a collaborative effort involving comic book retailers, publishers and distributors. The inaugural Free Comic Book Day was on May 4, 2002, coinciding with the release of the first wide-release Spider-Man film. This event provided specially printed comic books free of charge, showcasing a diverse array of titles from various publishers, with the aim of introducing readers to the expansive and multifaceted realm of comics. Since its inception, Free Comic Book Day has evolved into a significant annual celebration within the comic book community and beyond.

Beyond simply attracting new readers, FCBD serves as a vital platform for promoting upcoming releases, fostering connections between creators and fans, and nurturing a sense of community among comic book enthusiasts.

In this featured Registry set, ADAMANTIUM is on a quest to collect as many Free Comic Book Day issues as possible.

“Like it or not, these promotions are, or could be, good for the hobby. Get the people in to the brick and mortars, and give away some comics. Just make them worth the effort,” ADAMANTIUM wrote on their Registry set page. “Those ratty tatty comics were built sturdier than once thought! Give your Local Comic Shop some love. I'm blessed to live in a large metropolitan area, and there is enough LCS to go around.”

The comics already in this growing collection include:

  • Civil War II: Free Comic Book Day 2016
  • Spider-Man/Venom: Free Comic Book Day 2019
  • Avengers/X-Men: Free Comic Book Day 2022

“It is fun for the entire family, nothing beats Free Comic Book Day to take your kids, girl or boyfriends, spouses … Always the 1st Saturday in May!” ADAMANTIUM wrote.

There are 16 Registry members, including ADAMANTIUM, competing in the Free Comic Book Day (Marvel) category. For new collectors looking to jump into the competition, there is plenty of opportunity to move up quickly by adding just a few books!
